Kiss Norton Good Bye

The main reason why we were paying for the anti-virus software was to prevent the loss of precious data and the save the downtime resulting from the

system crash due to virus attack. But there was never any humility in the popup windows which asked you to ‘run live update’, ‘your computer is unsafe’, ‘renew or expire’, ‘shell out or crash’. It reflected an arrogant attitude which irked me into thinking how to stick my finger up at those popup anti-virus dictates.

My prayer seemed to be answered. Window Vista’s feature for seeking permission through a pop-up window for running any application aroused my curiosity to know more about it. I found out that there is a new in-built program called Windows Defender which is protecting my computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by unwanted software. It scans the system and contains real-time security! It works with the filter using the database of Microsoft’s SpyNet. It recommends corrective actions and minimizes interruptions and helps you stay productive. Windows Defender is FREE. You can download it for Windows XP too!

As in the software, there has been tremendous progress on the hard disc capacity. Now 160GB hard discs have become inexpensive and commonplace. The larger capacity affords the facility to store your data on another partition on the hard disc. I have three partitions, 40GB (C drive), 60GB (D drive), and 60GB (F drive). I use the C drive to install the Windows and other programs. The storage paths of the data are pointed to F drive. In the D drive I have copied program CDs of Windows Vista, the MS Office, and Adobe creative suite. My other favorite progs are also there: World Clock, Calc98, and Sudoku. The new versions of the free utilities as they become available, are downloaded on this drive and kept ready for installation: Skype, Adobe reader, and Irfan view.

The storage of data in another partition, i.e. the F drive, prevents the data from being lost if the computer crashes. The C Drive can be formatted in isolation without affecting D and F drives. The storage of programs in the D drive makes it easy, quick and painless to re-install all the programs without much ado.

You need to follow a certain discipline in order to keep the risk of virus attack at bay. The most dangerous sites are the XXX ones. These adult sites open a can of worms which invade your computer. Best is to avoid visiting these sites. However, if you can’t resist temptation of seeing adult pics, there is a safe way to do it. Go to google.com and open preferences. Scroll down to ‘Safe Search Filtering’. Select ‘Do Not Filter My Search Results’. Save preferences. Come back to Google opening screen and click on Images. Now search for adult content by typing out the XXX term in the search bar. Viola! You will see thumbnails of what you are looking for. Click on the thumbnail for a larger size. But do not click on any of the links; if you do you will be drawn straight into the virus whirlpool. And if there are kids in the house, don’t forget to change the preferences back to safe search before shutting down the computer!

The second most common door for the virus is the email client. You have to shut it. The availability of large-storage netmail accounts which started with googlemail, have made the automatic desktop download redundant. Now Aol, Hotmail, Yahoo all have very large storage facilities for your mail. Besides, these are all free and you can open as many accounts as you wish. You can forward your mail messages to these accounts to increase your storage capacity if required. You can download and save the attachments from your inbox mail on to your computer and if you wish to save any mail text, it is best to cut and paste it into a word file and save it on your computer on the F drive. That way the Outlook Express or the MS Outlook become redundant for email, and need not be used at all for this purpose. Not allowing the mail to download directly on to your PC helps in blocking one of the main pathways of infection.

I always find certain freshness in my computer when I reinstall the Windows. This is probably because the usage of the computer results in accumulating all kinds of rubbish data in the memory. I think the best thing to do is to format the C drive and reinstall Windows periodically, once in six months or a year. You can then reinstall the programs stored in the D drive. The latest versions of Skype, Adobe reader and Irfan view downloaded from the net on your F drive, are quickly installed to have them fresh on your computer without the interference of the earlier versions.

Basically you need to install Windows Defender on your Windows XP (or upgrade to Vista), save your data in another partition, and use net based email account for your correspondence. You can then heave a sigh of relief as your fear loss of data would have gone, and you are prepared for the worst by having planned for quick reinstallation of all your programs. You are then ready to kiss Norton good bye!

Internet Security - How Safe are You?

Warren Franklin

Is Your Internet Security Software

Keeping Up With The Cyber Crime Pandemic?

· Have you heard U.S. businesses lost over $67 billion to cyber crime in 2006 according to the FBI?

· Did you know that 87% of businesses suffered from some sort of cyber crime last year according to the same report?

· Approximately 15 million U.S. citizens will lose their identity this year according to the FTC

I could add that cyber crime out grew the illegal drugs business in 2006 according to the U.S. Department of Treasury, too. Needless to say we are looking at a huge problem. Many are calling the Internet security issue a pandemic.

Over the last couple of years hackers have shifted their focus from large targets to small business and individuals.

I’ll tell you why…

Small business and individuals don’t have the large sums of money needed to pay for the kind of Internet security protection used by large corporations. This makes both easier targets.

What are these two groups using to protect themselves? Generally, you find small business and individuals using over-the-counter and freeware (shareware) to protect their computers.

Over the last year, antivirus companies have attempted to counter the spyware problem, however, the fact is their code and signature files were not built to effectively remove spyware. How does this impact how well your home or business is protected? The rule for viruses is to keep them out. When it comes to spyware much more sophisticated code and scanning mechanisms are required.

Several September 2005 product reviews state that many antivirus applications have obvious deficiencies in antispyware cleaning and blocking routines. This makes it difficult to recommend these software products to individuals and businesses protecting themselves against the spyware problem. At this time, antivirus companies haven’t arrived at a solid solution.

So what are these anitvirus companies doing? Some are including some type of antispyware functionality into their products. Some vendors are selling patching and spyware combined into one. Others have mixed their spyware solution with their antivirus Bundled together, these solutions aren’t cost effective and probably deliver a lower level antispyware.

Several independent tests have shown that stand-alone antispyware products have been proven to be the most effective.

Today’s over-the-counter anti-virus Internet security products protect against specific code or signature files. Each virus has it’s own code. When the anti-virus software identifies the code it kicks it out or alerts the owner of the computer. Many anti-virus companies try to keep up with this, however consider this:

Professional hackers have developed spy ware that, once it enters a computer and steals your email addresses and other information, changes its code or signature file. The spy ware continues to invade new computers stealing information and changing its signature file automatically from computer to computer virtually making traditional over-the-counter anti-virus Internet security protection useless.

To be safe, small business and individuals need to find a proven Internet security solution that can fight against this type of cyber crime. This solution not only needs to aggressively keep up with the changing cyber crime landscape, but also anticipate what might be coming in the future. This is what the major corporations are using and it’s what you should have on your computer(s), too.

You may find it surprising that many vendors have downgraded or “delisted” known spyware and adware. This can jeopardize the security of your personal or business information.

Unfortunately, most Internet security software available to small business and individuals don’t have the ability to keep up with the growing cyber crime pandemic creating Internet insecurity.

Doug Woodall

It was late, I had put

off going to the

Software Convention till the last

minute. I just had to watch my favorite

show on TV, “S-Files”. Its that

episode where the Computer Salespeople

all turn into Pod People and ,,,,well

never mind. Its really scary!

So I’m driving down the lonely one lane

road from my house to the Convention.

Its dark and the shadows are creepy,

I’ll never watch S-Files again, I

swear! I pull into the parking lot, the

convention is being held in the old

YMCA. Geez, its dark, only 1 parking lot

light and its flickering on and off. As

I walk up to the entrance, I remember

the old story about how, back in the

Dot.Com days, when they tanked, the

building was used as a makeshift morgue,

to hold all the bodies of the CEO’s

who committed suicide.

I get this really creepy feeling on the

back of my neck as I go in,,,,oh, its

just a Linux software salesman at the

first booth. Is it my imagination or are

his eyes glowing?

I head to the registration desk to get a

program. I see the place is kind of

empty, guess cause its so late. Well,

I’m here to see who is offering the

latest demos and what kind of freebies I

can score.

The front booths are usually the big

sellers and they never give away

freebies or demos. So I head to the

back, hmmm, the lights back here are

terrible!

Here’s a booth, Anti-Spyware 4 U. The

salesman shuffles up to me and says

“Please take a demo of our new

product”. I look at it, it says this is

the latest greatest software to combat

Spyware. I take the CD out of the plain

paper cover and look at the Logo. Its

just a plain shiny cd? Wow I can see

myself in it I remark.

“We spared no expense” a voice says

behind me, making me jump. I didn’t

even know he was behind me. Wait, I

should have seen him behind me in the

reflection off the CD. I I’ve got to be

imagining things I say to myself.

I ask the salesman for a brochure about

their other products and as he hands it

to me, our fingers brush each others.

Jeez! His fingers are as cold as ice!

Well, he is a salesman after all.

I thank him and head off to the other

booths, seeing that I’ve gotten here

too late after all, everybody is

leaving. I decide to swing by the

refreshments table to see if I can at

least get a drink and some cookies.

It sure is dark in here I think again as

I come up to the table. As I scan the

table, a little old lady comes up and

asks me if Id like any milk and cookies.

Yes Mam I reply. She hands me a little

plate with cookies and paper cup of

something white. I assume its milk, but

its so dark in here! And there seems to

be a fog or steam on the surface of the

milk. Well beggars cant be choosers I

think to myself as I thank her. She

gives me a freaky cackling laugh as I

turn away, stunned I turn back around

and to my Horror, there is no-one there!

Where in blazes did she go ?

I’m out of here my mind screams to me

as I head for the door at a ever faster

walk. In a minute I’m in my car with

the doors locked and the engine warming

up.

Whew, That was the strangest Convention

I’ve ever seen. All the way home I’ve

got a death grip on the wheel, just

waiting for something to jump out of the

shadows. Like a IBM salesman, now that

would be scary!

If only I had known the other horrors

that awaited me! I breathe a sigh of

relief as I close and lock the living

room door behind me. Still shaking my

head I head over to my computer to try

out this latest and greatest

Anti-Spyware Software. As it boots, I

get a message to disable my own

Anti-Spyware program. I thing this odd,

but I remember reading somewhere online

that some programs can conflict with

others so I comply.

After a few seconds I get a message that

the new Program is installed and it

needs to connect to get possible

updates. So I get online and let it do

its thing. A reboot is needed it says,

OK so I reboot. The computer comes up

and I get online to check out the latest

results of the Mullet contest. what’s

this ? This isn’t my Homepage, it’s a

site where you can ,,,Holy Hand

Grenades! Its Porn!

I close the Browser and man alive, I’m

beset by about a dozen pop ups offering

me things that, well, no decent person

would want. I’m figuring now that I’ve

been had by this Anti-Spyware CD.

I do a Restore and get back to my Online

Mullet competition site. Then I remember

that I need to transfer some money in my

savings to my checking account. So I

head to the Bank site and take care of

it. I must be tired, the computer seems

slow to me. I check my mail and the wait

to login is frustrating.

I decide to call it a night. I’ll take

care of it tomorrow. After a tossing and

turning night and dreams of my computer

melting, the new day dawns. With a cup

of coffee I head to the computer to see

who won the Mullet Contest. The boot

takes forever and the login freezes the

first time so I have to power off and

back on again.

I’m really mad by now. I’ve been had

by some sleazy software company! I

finally get online but the Mullet

competition site wont load. I cant tell

if it’s the computer or maybe the

online connection.

As it dawns on me that I’m going to

have to take it in for service, I hope

I’ve got some extra in my savings to

cover it. I head to the Bank site but it

wont load either. Then I notice the Hard

Disk light blinking away. I’m not doing

anything at the time so it shouldn’t be

accessing anything. Cursing, I turn the

computer off and pick up the phone to

call the bank.

I get a live person after waiting only 5

minutes so I figure the day may be

improving. I give her my account info

and she comes back saying “I show that

account being closed last night after

all money was withdrawn”! .

There must be a mistake I say, she

checks it again and says its true. The

money in the account was transferred to

a Bank she has never heard of in

,,,,Transylvania of all places. As I

hang up in shock, I could have sworn I

heard her laughing just like the old

lady at the convention did last night.

I figure I better head to the Police

Station to get some help. In a Panic I

head for town. As I make the last turn

into town, I glance towards the location

of the YMCA, where all this started,

only to see its not there! Its burned to

the ground! Stunned, I stop in the

street and get out. Nothing but ashes.

The Man in the car behind me gets out

and asks me if I’m ok. I mumble I’m

lucky to be alive, I could have died in

there last night. Puzzled the man says,

but the YMCA burned down 2 nights ago!

As I get back into the car, I glance at

the spot on the seat where I put the CD

and the Pamphlet. Gone. Just a little

pile of dust. At the Police station, a

sergeant takes down my story and informs

me I’ve been the victim of online

Identity theft. As I’m leaving, A

couple of kids run by, in costumes,

yelling “Happy Halloween”

Are you scared ? You should be!

Firewalls of Linux

August 24, 2007 on 2:53 am | In Security, Linux, Firewalls | No Comments

Firewalls are necessary for computers if we connect to internet. There are different kinds of methods how the firewalls work and check the incoming

information. At the same time the firewalls let the outgoing ports open. It gives security for our computer and protects it from the system mistakes as well. For personal computers it can be enough and useful but for networks maybe not.

Linux uses iptables filter to give stronger protection and security. It’s a software in basic Linux packages. We can exactly determine that how we would like to check the incoming traffic with this program. We can define the criteria for each port, services and we can define our own strict rules for our incoming traffic.

For network level’s security there are several distributions for firewalls. IPCop is one of them. It’s only for security. We need a computer on which IPCop is running and there are some basic activities like framework, connection to network and routing. Linux distributions like SUSE or Fedora use to have graphical desktop, text editor and more software but on IPCop there are only these basic activities and the previously mentioned very important iptables. It’s our firewall between our network and the internet so we don’t work on it.

It needs a more complicated setup but it’s worth because it gives strong protection for our network.

A Conundrum Called Adware!

August 8, 2007 on 10:12 am | In Adware, Spyware, Software, Internet, Computers, Internet Security, Security | No Comments

We, as dedicated computer and software users, have traversed a long way from those bad days, when our computers used to get attacked by vicious sounding

viruses, Trojans, spyware and malwares. We are still are under constant threat from attack by invisible viruses or spyware. As the word “spyware” became a household name, and when it started creating havoc on thousands of computer systems the world over, security experts and anti-virus software professionals started taking notice of the menace posed by these spyware modules.

Strangely, all these spywares were designed and propagated by the so called software majors! However, with the passage of time, the word “spyware” became a dirty word among computer users, which needed to be avoided at any cost! As a result, everyone started to think that spyware is a piece of software that closely monitors your activities on computers and reports them back to its maker. In fact, all software users were neatly outflanked by these smart operators, who surreptitiously planted their evil creations in the computer systems. It was a peculiar situation, when people simply abhorred the word “spyware”, and they got irritated when it was suggested to them that their computer systems were being spied upon by these spyware modules. As a result, it was so convenient to label these software items, as something that is very dirty. And, it was a good way to make sure that everyone listened to this fact!

But, the situation is entirely different today; if you notice, there are a lot of public relation exercises that keep coming at you, non-stop for twenty-four hours a day. Many software majors claim that they are not making spyware anymore, but they make highly innovative “adware”! Paradoxically, these firms also claim that adware is actually very good for your computer system! As all computer users were just sighing relief, thinking that they had decisively won the moral war against “spyware”, they were in for a real surprise! Many software majors wanted to push computer users all over the world, with a clever strategy that was devised with a novel idea in mind (maybe ulterior?).

Though, these software majors stopped creating spyware altogether, they found another smart way to outflank computer users! It was very ingenious as well! And it had to be! It is so true that someone could plant legal software right into your computer, with your own consent, to monitor your online activities and browsing habits! And the amazing thing with these software modules was that there was absolutely no need to send those vital bits of information back to the software company! The program that was installed on your computer system did everything by itself!

These smart software items were designed to perform the same thing that was performed by spyware. However, there was no need for any spying with these software modules. The creators of these software programs were intelligent enough to call them “adware” and their monster creation was promoted by floating a huge publicity campaign. All of this was done to separate out adware from spyware!

A typical promotional ad ran like:

“Spyware is really bad and it deserves all those scoldings and whip lashes from people. Here is the change - what is being given to you is an adware, which we’re providing to you free of charge, provided you allow us to display some simple ads! But, there are some people who still hate all forms of advertising! Our adware is totally safe and secure for your computer system.”

It was all so brilliant and smart! We were really outflanked again by them! The big debate was not about how pervert it is to spy on us

without our knowledge, but whether or not advertising was a bad thing! In fact, the truth was that the software was achieving the same thing as before and nothing was really changed! In all, the big debate was centered on ads and not on spying!

Now, the big question is this: Is adware really that bad?

Here is a typical scenario:

It is all about your perception and how you create your own opinions.

When you call a spyware a real parasite, you’re automatically adding two different meanings!

Scenario A: It was definitely true that spyware is a monstrous creation that is designed to do only the bad things.

Scenario B: Spyware also meant that it was very evil in its nature, which made you and me take notice of its existence.

Over a period of years, an effort was made by us to make spyware, as something that is very dirty and bad. But, an equal effort was put to make adware a passable word, so as to make us believe that adware is totally different from spyware.

Do you really believe this argument? Most probably NO! It is time to act tough and stop pretending that adware is different from spyware! What exactly is the real difference between spyware and adware? The real truth is that there is not an iota of difference between them!

Here is the summary of the activities of each of these software programs:

Spyware = Monitoring your online activities and reporting them back to the creator.

Adware = It is stealthy, secretive, suspicious and as effective as damaging spyware. Same unannounced entry! Same pop-up ads!

If adware is so good and better (as claimed by its creators), why are computer users like you and me still complaining about it? Is it due to adware’s ability to know which online shops you visit and the type of goods you buy on them? Most probably, it is just a tip of a bigger picture.

You may notice that you’re disgusted to see that your computer takes ages to load up or you may get angry to see that, brand new toolbars appear over your browser. It is also painful to see those innumerable pop-ads loading on your desktop with an amazing regularity. You may also notice that your web browsers change their settings to something that is totally unexpected. In total, you have already lost control of your own computer and you’re helpless as well! Maybe you never observe this fact- it is all the same thing, from those spyware to today’s adwares! But, when it happens to you and your computer, you just want to shout and yell, STOP!

Did you ever know that adware is installed by those web sites that exploit many security flaws that exist in your computer system? Do you feel that companies that install such a program are perfectly legitimate? Definitely NO! These adwares are so intelligent in their software structure; adware is supported by a root kit that perfectly hides adware files. This is done intentionally to prevent you from detecting them. If your adware is perfect and legal, why are the so called creators trying to hide them from your gaze?

Adware is designed with such brilliance that it comes packaged with several memory files that keep appearing even when you delete them. All deleted entries keep bouncing back, even when they have been removed altogether. It means that adware is extremely difficult to remove from your computer. If this is true, adware is beginning to look like a very suspicious piece of software! How do you call adware a legitimate program, when you see your computer becoming a factory for producing tens of unintended pop-up windows on your desktop?

It is the right time to think critically and arrive at a valid conclusion to decide whether adware is legitimate or not. Let us stop

pretending to think that adware is a lesser evil than a spyware. It is also the right time not to pretend that adware is better than spyware. It is also a ripe time to stop pretending that there is a lot of difference between these two programs. Just make a visit to one of those spyware and adware forums, and you’ll understand why there are so many messages that are posted on the message boards that specifically ask for help to remove those annoying adwares. Most of the requests that are posted on these forums invariably center on an adware.

If you ask any experienced expert about an adware program, he or she will express a similar opinion that it is bad and painful. If you also ask them, if it is really possible to distinguish between spyware and adware, the answer will be a definite NO! In all possibilities and in essence, both are the same and identical.
